Delco Nightingale is bringing a rockin' new twist to swing era classics here in Philadelphia. This group of musical personalities is comprised of vocalist Erin Berry, guitarist Greg Phoenix, upright bassist Sawyer Thomas and drummer Eddie Everett. These musicians infuse their individual expertise in jazz, rockabilly, live theatre and outsider music to create a uniquely swinging sound. Their goal is to bring these cleverly written, fun and romantic songs not only to nostalgic listeners of big band standards, but also to a new audience whose familiarity with this music may not go beyond glances of WWII films and perused record collections from the family credenza. Any music lover who wants to see a fun and engaging show will certainly not be disappointed once they find themselves humming along with or dancing to the sounds of Delco Nightingale.

2 New Recordings

Delco Nightingale spent a recent weekend in Lancaster, PA recording with the incomparable Mr. Quentin Jones of Lanark records, and let me tell you, folks, we couldn't be happier with the results. We chose to do an ode to the upright penned by Gershwin, "Slap that Bass", and a delightful tale of perversion, "Yes My Darling Daughter", a 1941 Jack Lawrence tune based on a Ukranian folk song.

We arrived on Saturday to a warm greeting from Quentin, his lovely wife Caroline, and their hound, Zeus. After a few hours of setup, we got rolling. And what a great day of recording we had. We recorded everything live; not a single punch-in. We wanted to do in the way they used to, in the days when you actually could play instruments and sing and not rely on studio pixie dust to fix all your mistakes. Even the vocals are live; no scratch track with an overdub later on. Live, live, live, people!

We had been wanting a recording that truly captured us, and Quentin Jones of Lanark Records accomplished this for us in spades. We can't begin to express our gratitude to Quentin both for "getting it" as well as for his skills and ability to make it happen. And not only was the recording process a most enjoyable one; Quentin and Caroline made us feel so welcome and relaxed in their home. I'm sure that played a big part in how well the recording went. There was beer and barbecue and sunshine and log rolls down the hill in their back yard. Truly an idyllic experience all around.
We are looking forward to going back to Lancaster and recording with Quentin again, the first chance we get. And we give our highest recommendation for recording with Quentin to any band in a roots vein, whether it be jazz, rockabilly, americana... the man knows how to get that authentic sound. Heck, why don't you check out his page as well and give a listen!

We hope you all enjoy the new songs, and we look forward to seeing you at one of our shows real soon.

Delco Nightingale made their first foray into the studio in November of 2008. They were recorded by Matt Schenck at the Woodshop Studios space in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia. This 4 song EP consists of the following tracks: It's Been a Long Long Time (Styne/Cahn), Fascinating Rhythm (Gershwin), Perfidia (Alberto Dominguez) and It's Magic (Styne/Cahn).

"How many Philadelphia bands would dare cover Gershwin and Jack Lawrence in the same breath? Just one, clearly. Oozing with sultry confidence and some truly antique chops, Delco Nightingale gives nostalgia the good name it deserves" - Doug Wallen (Philadelphia Weekly, Philadelphia Inquirer).

"Delco Nightingale brings back the seductive swing tunes of the forties! Influenced by modern Rockabilly and Jazz, these cats make a sound that blends the old cabaret sound with down home rhythm, and their live performances showcase this excellently. Erin Berry sings and dresses the part...swaying to the melody of her tunes. Greg Phoenix plays his guitar dressed to impress with both vigor and intensity. Sawyer Thomas is reminiscent of the old time big bass players... Brian Turner keeps the genteel swing rhythm with the precision of a 1940's show band. A great show to see with an impressive old time sound to back it up." -Elvis McGovern (Wreckhouse Promotions)

Delco Nightingale is:

ERIN BERRY
Erin Berry was born in Ithaca, New York, but considers herself a midwestern girl at heart, having been raised in Chicago. She caught the bug for music at an early age, stealing away to her bedroom with her parents vinyl collection in tow. This bug paved the way for Erin's pursuit of the study of music theatre in college. It was at this time she also found herself singing in her first band, Shrinking Violet. It wasn't too long before Erin realized she felt more at home with rockers than thespians, so she dropped the school bit and continued on making music, next with a 12 piece R&B outfit called World Class Noise. A move to Connecticut brought another band, Hypnophan, as well as a decision to move to New York City to pursue yet another unsteady, low-paying career: costume design. After eight years in NYC, Erin moved to Philadelphia in 2008 to come what appears to be full circle: making the same music with Delco Nightingale as was on those records she swiped from her parents as a little girl.

GREG PHOENIX
Guitarslinger/singer/songwriter, I dig and play all things Americana, from rockabilly & 50s pop, honkytonk and alt-country, to psychobilly (check out my band, Speed Crazy, on myspace and NJSpeedCrazy.com!). A rock'n'roll fundamentalist and a true believer in the Holy Trinity of E/A/B7, I'll testify that "it don't mean a thang if it ain't got that twang". I started out playing rockabilly with Jet Black, then on to several swing & 60s pop-influenced projects (members of Crescent City Maulers), 'til I heard "the call of the wild", and forged off into the psychobilly unknown with Speed Crazy bandmates Erica and Jeremy. Last summer I picked up a spade, touring the finest American graveyards with the Memphis Morticians. Back at the ranch, alter-ego Greg Phoenix still roams the Americana countryside...

SAWYER THOMAS
A practitioner of Immediatism, Sean "The Sawyer" Thomas is driven by moment and process. His bass whacking history includes playing old-tyme swing, 1920's Eastern European standards, jazz spoofing with the adorable Zany Umbrella Circus, and forging avant-what-not audio sculptures with Pittsburgh's infamous Bullseal! Dominutive. Sean leans toward the pre-war styles, inspired by Wellman Braud and other masters of the days when tubby sounding basses were king. When he's free to roam, you'll find him at the shore during low tide, perched on a jetty trying to lure sirens with the song of a singing carpenter's saw.

EDDIE EVERETT
Eddie is the newest addition to Delco Nightingale. His wide range of sensitivity from torch songs to all out rock is greatly appreciated by the band. Eddie loves music. He tries to play drums everyday, whether it be with one of his bands or sitting in at an open mic. He consistently strives to become a better musician. Eddie has performed with Brian Setzer, The Legendary Shackshakers, Tommy Conwell, David Bromberg, The Rockats and a host of others. Eddie currently plays with The Winchesters, Nik Everett, Barry Ryan and others. He is a drum instructor and Show Director at The Paul Green School of Rock.

BRIAN TURNER
Brian is the drummer who got Delco Nightingale off the ground. His solo work on the Lanark recording of "Yes My Darling Daughter" is unforgettable. Brian still plays live with us on some occasions, and he can be heard playing completely different styles of music with Problem Solving and The Suitcases.
